Care Farm Rural Skills Officer (part time, contract role)
Near Leighton Buzzard, Buckinghamshire
1 day per week / £5,100 per annum (pro rata for 10 months)


The role
Horses Helping People is a full time therapeutic horsemanship centre and care farm providing activities for adults and children from disadvantaged backgrounds. We have recently received funding for the Neigh Team project, which will bring together volunteers (including people from both veteran and homeless communities) to build a nature trail with conservation habitats, create a vegetable garden, and work with driving horses. This contract role will be funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery fund and will run from March 2014 – December 2014. Key responsibilities are:

• Planning a nature trail, conservation areas and vegetable garden;
• Supervising volunteers in conservation work, agricultural and horticultural tasks and horse activities;
• Assessing horses for suitability for driving work, and training to the required standard; and
• Responsibility for health and safety on site.


The candidate
You must be self-motivated as well as being able to work as part of a team. The successful candidate must have the following key skills:
• At least one year’s experience in horticulture;
• At least one year’s experience of working with people with mental health issues;
• At least two years’ experience in conservation and wildlife work;
• At least two years’ experience in agricultural and land management including practical skills;
• At least two years’ experience of working therapeutically with horses and nature; and
• Horsemanship skills to training standard, including driving.

The following skills are considered desirable for this role:
• Awareness of issues facing veterans and the homeless; and
• Recent experience of working in a not for profit organisation.
